End of Summer Update

I realize I have gotten behind in my posts, but now that summer, if not necessarily the hot weather, is coming to an end, I hope to be posting regularly and frequently.  Summer tends to be a slow season in the district and this summer's hot weather did nothing to help traffic.  But that doesn't mean that we haven't all been buying and if you haven't visited 45th Street for awhile come down and see all the new, great things everyone has.

I haven't written much about my own shop, R. J. Fendorf Antiques, and I'm going to take this opportunity to do so.  I recently purchased much of the contents of a small estate from the Kansas City area and have some great new items in the shop. The two prize items are a period 18th century camel-back sofa and a late Regency/George IV concertina action dining room table.

I would normally call a sofa of this design "Chippendale," but with the slightly tapered legs it is moving into "Hepplewhite" even though it retains the traditional "camel-back" design associated with Chippendale sofas.  I would date it to 1780/1790 and believe it is English as opposed to American.  It is a desirable 72" overall width and the dust cover has been removed so you can examine the underside of the frame.  While the current upholstery is perfectly serviceable, this piece would benefit from a first class redo from our friends at Andrews & Abbey Riley down the street.  I believe the lines would be sharper and one would get the full effect of this great piece.
The dining room table is also English and with its Sheraton style legs I would date it to the 1820-1830 period.  The mahogany has great color and is an old, possibly original, finish.  It has a "concertina" action (as opposed to the usual "slides") and expands from a console table of 24" depth to a table of up to 8 feet.
I've read about concertina action tables but have never seen one before.  Georgian rooms were often small in size and this was a way both practical and ingenious for dealing with that.  This is an extremely versatile table as well as a great piece of cabinet making.  It includes four original leaves (You can see shadow marks from the concertina action on the bottoms of the leaves and only time can produce this.) and will seat from four to ten.
Another piece from the same estate is a great Chippendale style wing back armchair.  This piece probably dates from the 1920s if not a little earlier and has great lines.  It is very comfortable and large in size.  It does need to be recovered and is priced accordingly.

I also have two Chinese embroidery pieces taken from 19th century imperial robes as well as a selection of antique English porcelain, silver and silver plate, paintings and prints, including a great set of early 19th century engravings and lithographs of the monuments of ancient Rome.

On a practical note, I've had several messages passed on that people have been unable to post comments on the blog.  If you click on the "No comments" or "1 Comment," etc. at the end of each post a box should open allowing you to comment.   Your comment will not appear immediately because comments are moderated to prevent spam, but I check for comments daily and they should appear within 24 hours.  If you continue to have a problem posting comments email me at r.fendorf@att.net and I'll see if I can correct the problem.

See you on 45th Street!

Welcome!

Welcome to The Georgian Village, a blog about what's happening in and around the 45th & State Line Antique, Art & Design Center.  The 45th & State Line district contains over twenty shops providing antiques, art, jewelry, rugs and services such as furniture restoration and repair, framing and upholstering spread out along three blocks of 45th Street in Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas.  The area is Kansas City's premier source for antiques and is one of the few remaining antique districts in the United States.

The Georgian Village shops are located at 1714 West 45th Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64111, one block east of State Line Road at the northeast corner of 45th Street and Bell.  The complex houses seven shops selling antiques, estate jewelry, art and providing jewelry design and fabrication.

My own shop, R. J. Fendorf Antiques, is located in The Georgian Village.  After twenty plus years of collecting antiques and a case of burnout from practicing law and working in the nonprofit world for twenty plus years, I decided to try a change and open an antique shop.  I'd been a regular shopper at 45th & State Line for years.  When I decided to open a shop, I never considered any other location than the 45th & State Line area.  Why is that?  While Kansas City has other places you can shop for antiques, no other location offers the combination of concentration of shops and quality of merchandise to be found in the area at 45th & State Line.  The district also provides the opportunity to talk about the merchandise with the dealer selling it and take advantage of the dealer's knowledge and expertise (as well as the ability to discuss terms directly with the dealer).  This is something you can't do at an antique mall and for both the novice and the experienced collector is a big plus.  Many dealers will also allow you to take a piece home and try it out.  This is also something you won't find at most antique malls, markets or shows.  I don't know about others, but I am rarely an "impulse buyer" and the ability to look at, examine and consider a piece over time was and is important to me in making a purchase.

Now that you've been introduced to the district, what can you expect from this blog in the future?
Over the next few weeks you will be introduced to the dealers in the district, see samples of their stock, get updates on new items available in the district, read design tips and information about antiques and art, and generally be kept abreast of what's going on in and around the district.

Merchant Profile: Joseph's

Joseph Candioto finds it hard to believe he is going on his 48th year in the estate jewelry and antiques business.  "I had a beauty salon and I decorated it with antique mirrors, paintings, french tables and lamps and my receptionist sat behind a french desk with gold french chairs in the waiting room.  Antiquing was my hobby so I placed items around the shop.  Customers kept buying and I kept replacing and before I knew it I had a small case of jewelry that my receptionist would show.  This worked out great because it gave my receptionist something to do besides answering the phone!"

From that beginning, a hobby and interest turned into a business.  Joseph moved to the 45th & State Line district 18 years ago and says he will be there until he quits.  "It's been quite a ride because I've handled treasures from all over the world.  I've met and sold to the most interesting people and, yes, even movie stars.  The stories I could tell and I have lots of them!"
South Sea pearl necklace, largest pearl 18 1/2 mm; South Sea pearl and diamond earrings

Joseph says that the business has really changed over the years.  "When I first started in business a one carat diamond ran around $300 and gold was $32 an ounce.  I tell people that in my 48 years of business I've never seen jewelry go down in price."

Diamond necklace, approx. 15 carats
"I've always tried to buy estate pieces that one doesn't see every day and to buy on the secondary market, which is below wholesale.  We all want a good deal, although good pieces are getting harder to find."
Georgian en tremblant brooch, diamonds, 10-12 carats, mounted in gold
Pictured here are some of the unique pieces in Joseph's inventory of which he is most proud.  Joseph's has a variety from an American Indian squash blossom necklace to an elegant diamond necklace.  Come by and take a look for yourself.

Merchant Profile: Kincaid's at 45th

Cindy Kincaid has always had an interest in antiques and always collected.  When her sons were playing hockey, she would shop in the small town antique shops while on hockey trips.  This eventually led her to "test the waters" with a mall space and then quickly coming to the 45th & State Line district.  Cindy has been in the district for almost fifteen years, moving from a space in the Georgian Village to one of the largest shops in the district on the corner of 45th Street and State Line.

Cindy mainly imports pieces from China - furniture, ceramics, architectural pieces, metal works, and decorative items.  You'll also find lamps, garden pieces and a selection of non-Chinese pieces.

Cindy's pieces make great additions to both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Cindy recently has added a line of pieces from Bali made from reclaimed items.

Drop by Wednesday through Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm and let Cindy help you choose something.
